ERIE, Pa. - General Electric and CBRail have
signed a purchase contract for the rebuilding
of 20 M62/ST44 locomotives in Poland, with an
option for a additional 10. The M62/ST44 has
been a workhorse of the Polish fleet over the
years, but requires a rebuilding program to
improve reliability and reduce operating
costs.
[eng]ST44 is the Polish name for a Soviet heavy
freight diesel exported to Poland beginning in
the 1960s and known in the USSR under the
designation M62. Deliveries continued until
the 1980s with 1,113 locomotives delivered in
total.
CBRail has contracted with GE for each
locomotive to be fitted with a new GE power
unit containing a FDL12 engine, alternator,
and auxiliary equipment. Traction motors will
also be upgraded.
